Every true wife makes her husband’s interests her own. While he lives for her, carrying her image in his heart and toiling for her all the days—she thinks only of what will do him good. When burdens press upon him—she tries to lighten them by sympathy, by cheer, by the inspiration of love. She enters [...]

Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame. (1 Corinthians 15:33-34)

Interlocking Circles

In Meet Outlaw Preachers yesterday Apprising Ministries posted the new video from the rather rapscallion bunch, who have crowned themselves outlaw preachers, and are now sprouting up around head Outlaw gay affirming “pastor” Jay Bakker. The main point was to alert you that now these rebels are begining to band together with the wider egregiously ecumenical Emerging Church aka Emergent Church—morphing into Emergence Christianity (EC).

A case in point is EC leader Tony Jones, “theologian in residence” at the Emergent Church of his quasi-universalist “pastor” Doug Pagitt, listed in the credits of the video and practicing lesbian “Christ-follower” Adele Sakler aka Existential Punk. If you didn’t know, budding LGBTQ activist Sakler is adminstrator of the Queermergent group website and has been “co-leader” of the Richmond Emergent Cohort, which is aligned with Emergent Village.

Turns out that Sakler’s pretty excited about being featured among the seducing spirits and outlaws now sowing doctrines of demons in their perversion of the grace of God too:

New Post at Existential Punk: ‘i’m An Outlaw Preacher!’ http://twurl.nl/xti85c THANK YOU, @conniejoh2o for including me! i am so honored! (Online source)

What’s important to understand here is, regardless of how silly/bizarre the doctrines spewed by these rebels against the final authority of God’s Word may seem to you, the fact remains that this spiritually poisonous postliberalism of the EC has slowly been injected into evangelical Young Adult and Youth Groups for years now. It has been eating away at an entire generation of youth who by and large now wouldn’t know proper Biblical doctrine if they saw it.

When The Blind Lead The Blind They Are Certain To Go Astray

I’ll give you a quick illustration here. Unless you’ve been communing with E.T. on another planet somewhere you’ll know that Emerging Church icon Rob Bell is easily the rock star of the EC, which is why I often refer to him as the Elvis of Emergence. However, when we consider e.g. that Bell is in agreement with unbelieving New Age priestess Marianne Williamson as they quote “The Great Enlightened Ones” Who Tell Us Man Has Divine Greatness, the question becomes: Is Rob Bell Evangelical?

Sadly, in today’s postmodern Humpty Dumpty language, the answer is: Yes. So now the door to the mainstream evangelical community is wide open for Bell, who early on attacked Sola Scriptura because he’s an open practioner of highly subjective and corrupt Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism, which like all mystics then becomes his governing hermeneutic for Scripture. In Rob Bell, Peter Rollins And Phyllis Tickle Together Advancing Emergence Christianity you can see Bell considers Peter Rollins his friend.

And in additon Bell also tells us that Rollins is one of the freshest voices I’ve heard. As you’ll see in Rob Bell, Peter Rollins, And Queermergent’s Adele Sakler EC royalty such as Brian McLaren and Phyllis Tickle are huge fans of Rollins themselves. So by featuring Rollins at his recent pastor’s conference Bell would use his own popularity to open the door wider for his friend to crossover more into the mainstream of apostatizing evangelicalism. If you think these associations happen by accident; think again, there’s an agenda.

This brings us to Sakler and Rollins. Sadly, from her own testimony below Sakler tells us “the great Peter Rollins” is largely responsible for helping her find comfort in her unrepentant sin of homosexuality:

In 2002 I went to Northern Ireland to do a DTS with YWAM. I met the great Peter Rollins and we developed a great friendship. His teachings and writings on postmodernism and Christianity radically shaped how I viewed my faith. I could no longer hang onto certainty with regards to interpreting scripture. (Online source, emphasis mine)

If you have any love for GLBTQ people, for whom Jesus died, then this ought to make you angry; Rollins isn’t to be commended, he should be roundly rebuked for his homopression of Sakler. This is the necessary background with which to listen to Salker interview her friend, shooting star of the EC, Peter Rollins on the something beautiful podcast—part of the Emergent Podcast Network of Emergent Village—and which is:

a weekly experiment in podcasting. we hope it truly becomes stories worth talking about. stories about God, life, friends, family and why it all matters. join us as we share why God matters to us all and how it impacts our life. (Online source)

The intro to this edition of the podcast informs us:

this week our good friend Adele Sakler (@existentialpunk) shares audio from a chat with her friend, author Peter Rollins. Rollins is the founder and coordinator of the experimental collective in Belfast, Ireland, Ikon. he is also a writer, speaker and blogger. he’s the author of the books, “How (Not) To Speak Of God,” “The Fidelity of Betrayal: Towards a Church Beyond Belief,” and most recently, “The Orthodox Heretic and Other Impossible Tales.” (Online source

You can listen to this podcast featuring Peter Rollins, whom Rob Bell says is one the the “freshest voices” of the EC and Emerging Church guru Brian McLaren tells us helped him ”understand my own spiritual journey more clearly,” by clicking here. There’s really no gentle way to say this; but those who wish to hide in the shadows of uncertainty and ambiguity are the unregenerate, and/or those who are unwilling to repent of their sin and come into the Light. From such, turn away.

Introduction to Michael Spencer, The Internet Monk

August 31, 2009

Click the post title to be taken to the source.
Internet Monk is the personal web space of writer and communicator Michael Spencer. You can learn all about him here.

While I don’t like all of his opinions or what he writes, it’s hard to deny that his articles are often times compelling. It’s that shiny object syndrome. You just can’t look away.

The following article is one that he posted as a commentary at the Christian Science Monitor, not a place I would reccomend for Christians to spend any amount of time. But, that’s where I found this article while looking for something completely different.

The piece caused quite a stir among blogging evangelicals which prompted Spencer to post athe original three-part more and in depth article.

The Coming Evangelical Collapse

By Michael Spencer

An anti-Christian chapter in Western history is about to begin. But out of the ruins, a new vitality and integrity will rise.

Oneida, Ky. – We are on the verge – within 10 years – of a major collapse of evangelical Christianity. This breakdown will follow the deterioration of the mainline Protestant world and it will fundamentally alter the religious and cultural environment in the West.

Within two generations, evangelicalism will be a house deserted of half its occupants. (Between 25 and 35 percent of Americans today are Evangelicals.) In the “Protestant” 20th century, Evangelicals flourished. But they will soon be living in a very secular and religiously antagonistic 21st century.
This collapse will herald the arrival of an anti-Christian chapter of the post-Christian West. Intolerance of Christianity will rise to levels many of us have not believed possible in our lifetimes, and public policy will become hostile toward evangelical Christianity, seeing it as the opponent of the common good.
Millions of Evangelicals will quit. Thousands of ministries will end. Christian media will be reduced, if not eliminated. Many Christian schools will go into rapid decline. I’m convinced the grace and mission of God will reach to the ends of the earth. But the end of evangelicalism as we know it is close.
Why is this going to happen?
1. Evangelicals have identified their movement with the culture war and with political conservatism. This will prove to be a very costly mistake. Evangelicals will increasingly be seen as a threat to cultural progress. Public leaders will consider us bad for America, bad for education, bad for children, and bad for society.
The evangelical investment in moral, social, and political issues has depleted our resources and exposed our weaknesses. Being against gay marriage and being rhetorically pro-life will not make up for the fact that massive majorities of Evangelicals can’t articulate the Gospel with any coherence. We fell for the trap of believing in a cause more than a faith.
2. We Evangelicals have failed to pass on to our young people an orthodox form of faith that can take root and survive the secular onslaught. Ironically, the billions of dollars we’ve spent on youth ministers, Christian music, publishing, and media has produced a culture of young Christians who know next to nothing about their own faith except how they feel about it. Our young people have deep beliefs about the culture war, but do not know why they should obey scripture, the essentials of theology, or the experience of spiritual discipline and community. Coming generations of Christians are going to be monumentally ignorant and unprepared for culture-wide pressures.
3. There are three kinds of evangelical churches today: consumer-driven megachurches, dying churches, and new churches whose future is fragile. Denominations will shrink, even vanish, while fewer and fewer evangelical churches will survive and thrive.
4. Despite some very successful developments in the past 25 years, Christian education has not produced a product that can withstand the rising tide of secularism. Evangelicalism has used its educational system primarily to staff its own needs and talk to itself.
5. The confrontation between cultural secularism and the faith at the core of evangelical efforts to “do good” is rapidly approaching. We will soon see that the good Evangelicals want to do will be viewed as bad by so many, and much of that work will not be done. Look for ministries to take on a less and less distinctively Christian face in order to survive.
6. Even in areas where Evangelicals imagine themselves strong (like the Bible Belt), we will find a great inability to pass on to our children a vital evangelical confidence in the Bible and the importance of the faith.
7. The money will dry up.
What will be left?
•Expect evangelicalism to look more like the pragmatic, therapeutic, church-growth oriented megachurches that have defined success. Emphasis will shift from doctrine to relevance, motivation, and personal success – resulting in churches further compromised and weakened in their ability to pass on the faith.
•Two of the beneficiaries will be the Roman Catholic and Orthodox communions. Evangelicals have been entering these churches in recent decades and that trend will continue, with more efforts aimed at the “conversion” of Evangelicals to the Catholic and Orthodox traditions.
•A small band will work hard to rescue the movement from its demise through theological renewal. This is an attractive, innovative, and tireless community with outstanding media, publishing, and leadership development. Nonetheless, I believe the coming evangelical collapse will not result in a second reformation, though it may result in benefits for many churches and the beginnings of new churches.
•The emerging church will largely vanish from the evangelical landscape, becoming part of the small segment of progressive mainline Protestants that remain true to the liberal vision.
•Aggressively evangelistic fundamentalist churches will begin to disappear.
•Charismatic-Pentecostal Christianity will become the majority report in evangelicalism. Can this community withstand heresy, relativism, and confusion? To do so, it must make a priority of biblical authority, responsible leadership, and a reemergence of orthodoxy.
•Evangelicalism needs a “rescue mission” from the world Christian community. It is time for missionaries to come to America from Asia and Africa. Will they come? Will they be able to bring to our culture a more vital form of Christianity?
•Expect a fragmented response to the culture war. Some Evangelicals will work to create their own countercultures, rather than try to change the culture at large. Some will continue to see conservatism and Christianity through one lens and will engage the culture war much as before – a status quo the media will be all too happy to perpetuate. A significant number, however, may give up political engagement for a discipleship of deeper impact.
Is all of this a bad thing?
Evangelicalism doesn’t need a bailout. Much of it needs a funeral. But what about what remains?
Is it a good thing that denominations are going to become largely irrelevant? Only if the networks that replace them are able to marshal resources, training, and vision to the mission field and into the planting and equipping of churches.
Is it a good thing that many marginal believers will depart? Possibly, if churches begin and continue the work of renewing serious church membership. We must change the conversation from the maintenance of traditional churches to developing new and culturally appropriate ones.
The ascendency of Charismatic-Pentecostal-influenced worship around the world can be a major positive for the evangelical movement if reformation can reach those churches and if it is joined with the calling, training, and mentoring of leaders. If American churches come under more of the influence of the movement of the Holy Spirit in Africa and Asia, this will be a good thing.
Will the evangelicalizing of Catholic and Orthodox communions be a good development? One can hope for greater unity and appreciation, but the history of these developments seems to be much more about a renewed vigor to “evangelize” Protestantism in the name of unity.
Will the coming collapse get Evangelicals past the pragmatism and shallowness that has brought about the loss of substance and power? Probably not. The purveyors of the evangelical circus will be in fine form, selling their wares as the promised solution to every church’s problems. I expect the landscape of megachurch vacuity to be around for a very long time.
Will it shake lose the prosperity Gospel from its parasitical place on the evangelical body of Christ? Evidence from similar periods is not encouraging. American Christians seldom seem to be able to separate their theology from an overall idea of personal affluence and success.
The loss of their political clout may impel many Evangelicals to reconsider the wisdom of trying to create a “godly society.” That doesn’t mean they’ll focus solely on saving souls, but the increasing concern will be how to keep secularism out of church, not stop it altogether. The integrity of the church as a countercultural movement with a message of “empire subversion” will increasingly replace a message of cultural and political entitlement.
Despite all of these challenges, it is impossible not to be hopeful. As one commenter has already said, “Christianity loves a crumbling empire.”
We can rejoice that in the ruins, new forms of Christian vitality and ministry will be born. I expect to see a vital and growing house church movement. This cannot help but be good for an evangelicalism that has made buildings, numbers, and paid staff its drugs for half a century.
We need new evangelicalism that learns from the past and listens more carefully to what God says about being His people in the midst of a powerful, idolatrous culture.
I’m not a prophet. My view of evangelicalism is not authoritative or infallible. I am certainly wrong in some of these predictions. But is there anyone who is observing evangelicalism in these times who does not sense that the future of our movement holds many dangers and much potential?

Secret CPC Directive Calls for the Dismantling of Six House Churches in Beijing

August 30, 2009

Click the post title to be taken to the source.

August 25, 2009

BEIJING—On August 25, 2009, ChinaAid learned the Chinese government recently issued a secret directive calling the government agencies to dismantle at least six major house churches before the end of August. ChinaAid believes these actions have been taken in preparation for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the CPC’s rule in China.

Reliable sources told ChinaAid that the Beijing Huajie Plaza received an order from the PSB to terminate its rental contract with the Beijing Shouwang house church. One of the largest house churches in the area, Beijing Shouwang Church has been renting two floors for their worship and Sunday school services in Huajie Plaza for a few years. The church has over 1,000 church members, and most of them are intellectuals from universities. This is the most recent action against Beijing Shouwang Church since government officials forcibly shut down their church website on April 13, 2009, and raided the church on May 11, 2008.

Click here to visit the reinstated Shouwang Church Website, http://shwchurch.com.

Other house churches in Beijing recently received similar pressure to stop church gatherings. This is believed to be the first step taken by the Chinese government to crack down on the house churches in Beijing.

In mid-August, three government officials, including members of the PSB and RAB, disrupted a baptism service held at a river in the Beijing suburbs by one house church from Haidian district. Outside Beijing, a TSPM church in Zhejiang was also raided, and more than 2 tons of Sunday school materials were confiscated. A house church training school in Shandong province was also raided and banned by the authorities.

The Power Of Repentance

August 30, 2009

Click the post title to be taken to the source.

He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” (Luke 24:36-47, NASB)

We Have Largely Forgotten Repentance For The Forgiveness Of Sins

Dr. Donald Grey Barnhouse, despite our small differences, was beyond question a very well-respected teacher of the Bible. Below he speaks of:

a Sunday School teacher [who] once asked a class what was meant by the word “repentance.” A little boy put up his hand and said, “It is being sorry for your sins.”

A little girl also raised her hand and said, “Please, it is being sorry enough to quit [sinning].” There is, indeed, a vast difference between the two. That is why the Lord said through [His prophet] Joel — Rend your heart and not your garments (Joel 2:13). (Illustrating Great Themes of Scripture, 128).

You see, what’s being lost right now through the man-centered doctrine of the various forms of seeker-sensitive—and virtually pelagian—Church Growth Movement is that someone who is truly sorry for something will admit that he was wrong; thereby taking responsibility for the wrong, and he will then stop doing that thing.

As Barnhouse also said:

The [true] born-again Christian, looking upon his heart, is forced to say: If I were but the justice of God, I would send myself to eternal separation from God. If I were but the holiness of God, I would separate myself eternally from that holiness. Then we can understand that only by that redeeming love which came to the cross and bore the stroke of that justice and the separation of the holiness, is it possible for love to redeem us and draw us to Him. (ibid.)

Therein lies another very key aspect of the vicarious penal substitutionary of Jesus on the Cross, which is so vital for us to finally come to understand. And it also just happens to be the very area that Satan and his minions really work so hard to keep Christians from grasping.

The enemy knows that if he can keep you from understanding this, then he can also keep you from being effective in your witness for Jesus in this hour of growing spiritual darkness. A time when even people within the visible church of Jesus Christ themselves are so desperately in need of the power unleashed by God at the Cross.

And here’s what Satan doesn’t want you to discover: When you are regenerated i.e. “born again” his control over you is completely broken; and you are no longer a slave to the prince of the power of the air. Can you see it now; Satan is only the prince of the power of air—the ruler of…well, nothing!

By other men’s sins, a holy man is put in mind of the badness of his own heart. Bernard makes mention of an old man, who, when he saw any man sin, lamented and wept for him; and being asked why he grieved so, for other men’s sins, answered, "He fell today—and [...]

MEET OUTLAW PREACHERS

August 30, 2009

Click the post title to be taken to the source.

Apprising Ministries has brought to your attention a rather rapscallion bunch, who have crowned themselves outlaw preachers, now sprouting up around head Outlaw gay affdirming “pastor” Jay Bakker. This growing, largely Biblically illiterate, group of “preachers” is currently Turning God’s Grace Into An Idol

For more on what is meant by that the interested reader is referred to ELCA, Gospel Reductionism, And Homosexuality. Here we bring to your attention that today ”pastor” Connie Waters, whom AM introduced you to in Jay Bakker In Memphis On Same-Sex Marriage, Tweets excitedly:

The Outlaw video has arrived! http://vimeo.com/6342344 (RT TO EVERYONE and post this on your blogs and facebooks!) #outlawpreachers (Online source)

This link above takes you to the video below, which is an ode to outlaws, lovingly set to the “worship” music of AC/DC’s Back In Black. It contains many still shots, to use a figure of speech, of various rebels against the final authority of the Word of God. I found it interesting to note that at 1:12 we see Existential Punk aka practicing lesbian “Christ-follower” Adele Sakler.

Still think this is simply an isolated movement with no ties to the egregiously ecumenical Emerging Church aka Emergent Church—morphing into Emergence Christianity (EC); think again. Check the credits for this nefarious piece and you see the name of EC leader Tony Jones. You may recall from Queermergent Adele Sakler And Emergent Village  it was Jones who would first introduces us to Sakler and her Queermergent group.

In fact, as of this writing, the top post is a “sermon” from Sakler’s friend “queer inclusive” ELCA “pastor” Nadia Bolz-Weber. Oddly enough pastrix Bolz-Weber, who has publicly aligned herself with these snakes, is missing from the video, which informs us:

The Outlaw Preacher Conference is on its way! Spring 2010 Details TBA

We’re also told that all the “Outlaw Precasts” can be found at the website of Bakker’s partner in perverting the grace of God Khad Young. For my more conservative ELCA readers, this means this warped antinomianism is already coming to a youth group near you. And for the rest, I strongly suggest you take a good look at your Young Adult and Youth ministries before susch as these slither into your own churches.

MARTIN LUTHER ON HOMOSEXUALITY

August 30, 2009

Click the post title to be taken to the source.

Martin Luther correctly identifies homosexuality with the sin of Sodom. Commenting on Genesis 19:4-5 he writes:

I for my part do not enjoy dealing with this passage, because so far the ears of the Germans are innocent of and uncontaminated by this monstrous depravity; for even though disgrace, like other sins, has crept in through an ungodly soldier and a lewd merchant, still the rest of the people are unaware of what is being done in secret. The Carthusian monks deserve to be hated because they were the first to bring this terrible pollution into Germany from the monasteries of Italy. (Luther’s Works, Vol. 3, 251-252)

And then in the same section of the Genesis lecturers, Luther refers to:

the heinous conduct of the people of Sodom ” as “extraordinary, inasmuch as they departed from the natural passion and longing of the male for the female, which is implanted into nature by God, and desired what is altogether contrary to nature. Whence comes this perversity? Undoubtedly from Satan, who after people have once turned away from the fear of God, so powerfully suppresses nature that he blots out the natural desire and stirs up a desire that is contrary to nature.
