THE EMERGENCE GOSPEL OF GOOD DEEDS

If you still think that this reimagined and repainted inclusive squishy social gospel of good deeds preached by postliberals like Rob Bell is something new; you’d better think again.

Here’s J. Gresham Machen from his book Christianity & Liberalism written in 1923:

But if Christianity be directed toward another world; if it be a way by which individuals can escape from the present evil age to some better country, what becomes of “the social gospel”? At this point is detected one of the most obvious lines of cleavage between Christianity and the liberal Church. The older evangelism, says the modern liberal preacher, sought to rescue individuals, while the newer evangelism seeks to transform the whole organism of society: the older evangelism was individual; the newer evangelism is social.

This formulation of the issue is not entirely correct, but it contains an element of truth. It is true that historic Christianity is in conflict at many points with the collectivism of the present day; it does emphasize, against the claims of society, the worth of the individual soul. It provides for the individual a refuge from all the fluctuating currents of human opinion, a secret place of meditation where a man can come alone into the presence of God. It does give a man courage to stand, if need be, against the world; it resolutely refuses to make of the individual a mere means to an end, a mere element in the composition of society. It rejects altogether any means of salvation which deals with men in a mass; it brings the individual face to face with his God. In that sense, it is true that Christianity is individualistic and not social.

But though Christianity is individualistic, it is not only individualistic. It provides fully for the social needs of man. (Online source, 152, 153)

The Deceitfulness of Sin

January 21, 2009

Click the post title to be taken to the source.

It is not very costly to profess Christ. Anyone can do that. Christianity becomes costly when the professing Christian stands and does not fall away in the face of persecution or pressure to conform to some position or stance that is clearly opposed in some way to God’s clear commands found in His Word. For the Christian to commit this sin will be either to disobey God in an act of commission or omission. In any case, when the professing Christian takes each step in disobedience a layer of scar tissue is burned into their conscious with the searing hot iron of deliberate sin. Over time those professing Christians will each have an inoperable conscious and the processes which caused this will have proven that these compromisers have become victims of the deceitfulness of sin and, therefore, they will become what the Bible refers to as apostate. Some of these will still believe they are Christians, but others will refer to themselves as ‘former Christians.’ The Word tells us though that they “went out” from “us” because they were never in Christ to begin with. All genuine believers “continue” in faithfulness to the end.

The “Change” is Here!

January 21, 2009

The following is a list of priorities Mr. Obama has posted on the White House website. This is what emerging evangelical leaders like Brian McLaren were hoping for as they promoted Obama during the campaign. No commentary is even necessary. (This is from MassResistance.org, a pro-family group in Massachusetts.)

1. First day in office, Obama begins deconstruction of society and traditional values.

If anybody actually believes that Obama isn’t really an ultra-leftwing radical, get ready for a rude awakening. The Obama administration is wasting no time with its plans to change America.

Within an hour of his swearing-in, the following was posted on the official White House website, as Obama’s immediate “civil rights” goals.

* Protect cross-dressing and transgenderism in workplace (including schools) through federal law: Pass “Employment non-discrimination Act” [EDNA] to prohibit “discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity or expression”.

* Expand hate crime statutes, including the radical “Matthew Shepard Act” which would allow the federal government to prosecute and punish if the crime was perceived to be “motivated by prejudice based on the actual or perceived . . . gender, sexual orientation, gender identity” of the victim.

* “Reinvigorate” the federal Department of Justice to pursue prosecution current hate crime laws against citizens.

* Repeal the Defense of Marriage Act [DOMA]

* Push for full civil unions and federal recognition of homosexual couples, with benefits equal to actual marriage. (This appears to be leading up to full federal recognition of same-sex “marriage”.)

* Allow homosexuals to serve openly in the military – repeal “Don’t ask don’t tell.”

* Use the federal government to expand adoptions of children by homosexuals.

* Using the federal government to push for more sex-education and contraception in schools and throughout society (especially in light of the goal to repeal DOMA).

* Lift the federal ban on needle exchange -as a “politically correct” way to attempt to combat AIDS without being highlighting the real cause homosexuality and drug use. According to the website, Obama wants to “confront the stigma — too often tied to homophobia — that continues to surround HIV/AIDS.”

Entire “civil rights” list from White House web site

And as we’ve already reported, Obama is helping the homosexual movement target the schools, having appointed his buddy Arne Duncan as US Secretary of Education. This past October, Duncan recommended that the Chicago Board of Education approve a special homosexual/ bisexual / transgender public high school. But there was so much outrage that even the pro-homosexual Mayor of Chicago, Richard Daley, backed away from the idea. Now, he’ll have free reign.

Wall Street Journal: Duncan Caused Stir With Plan for High School for Gays

It’s gotten to a point where the homosexual blogs are keeping a scorecard of the various homosexual activists that Obama is bringing into major positions in the US government.

And of course, Obama had a Gene Robinson, the homosexual activist Episcopal bishop, give a major prayer during inauguration week. And he had a “proud” homosexual band march in the inauguration parade.

And we’re just one day into the new administration. . .

Doubletree Hotel G-y Orgy Cancellation Brings Wrath

January 21, 2009

Peter LaBarbra writes about the response his organization has gotten after the Inaugural Pig S-x Orgy was canceled at the Doubletree Hotel in Washington. It was only canceled after citizens raised serious health concerns about what was supposed to go down in several conference rooms at the hotel. The full blast of Satanic hate for Christ and truth is evident in the emails Peter has received. Like the lust-crazed residents of Sodom who tried to break down Lot’s door to molest the angelic visitors, there is much the same spirit now loose in America. This is what happens when salt refuses to be salt but instead takes on the flavor of the culture around it. Rather than hold up the Gospel hope for those trapped in this life of sexual perversion, Christians have been content to ignore it, make peace with it, even justify it in the name of “love”. True love will tell of the consequences of sin and present the hope found only in Christ.

Several years ago, I walked through the NRB Expo center in Nashville with a former lesbian that God had delivered. She had been in bondage so deeply that it had almost killed her. “Nobody, in all those years, shared Christ with me but one person. Every other Christian I knew thought they were being loving by not bringing the subject up. I needed to hear about hell, but didn’t until I was in my late 30’s,” she told me.

True love shares the truth. If we love the souls of the lost, holding back for fear of sounding unloving or judgmental only consigns the lost to more of the same.

Mark Driscoll Praises Rick Warren for Blessing Obama

January 21, 2009

Click the post title to be taken to the source.

Sex expert Pastor Mark Driscoll took time out from his bedroom advice blog to praise Risk Warren for his prayer blessing for Barack Obama. With Driscoll’s promotion of sites like ChristianNymphos.org and its advice on things like how to be a Christian dominatrix, the public thank-you may be a mixed blessing for the Purpose-Driven author who really doesn’t need any more controversy right now. That Mark Driscoll couldn’t discern the problem with praying God’s blessing on our death-promoting President should not register as a surprise. Driscoll also can’t discern the problem with playing a pastoral Dr. Ruth for his sex-addled followers.

To use Scriptural precedent for publicly praying God’s blessing on a leader who is an enemy of God is an abomination. Rick Warren’s prayer was the equivalent of standing up before Pol Pot, Idi Amin or Joseph Stalin and asking God to bless them. Yes, yes. We must pray for our leaders that they will have wisdom as they murder millions of  innocent people. We’re simply fulfilling Scripture’s requirements, you know. We pray that Mr. Hitler will serve with excellence and distinction. We ask that Pol Pot would do well in his killing fields and that Idi Amin would be strengthened in his task of raping and torturing innocent women. There is no difference in Mr. Warren’s prayer for Obama unless Mr. Driscoll does not recognize the humanity of the children who have been killed already under Roe and who will be murdered with the Freedom of Choice Act Obama has promised to sign into law within days.

God save us from this kind of evil, aided and abetted by the counterfeit shepherds in this land. The prophets and priests are profane. They run to and fro on the face of the earth, saying, “God said so,” when God did not say so. See Jeremiah 23 for a full description of what we have in our plexiglass pulpits today.

The Horse and His Rider Have Been Thrown Into the Sea!

January 21, 2009

Click the post title to be taken to the source.

Tomorrow is the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. The horror of what abortion is was driven home to Tom and me as we recently watched the ultrasound images of our newest Schlueter. (”Micro-Schlueter” as Tom says.) Seeing the tiny little heart beating strongly away and hearing that heartbeat again last week, the distinctness and uniqueness of an individual human being was blatantly apparent. It wasn’t my heartbeat that was blinking on the screen. It wasn’t my heartbeat we were hearing with the Doppler. It was another human being who, even by the 10th week, has unique fingerprints, who can yawn and who is wholly, utterly one of a kind. I have no rights over this child. I do have, however, an awesome responsibility before God to nurture, love and protect it from all harm.

I spent yesterday morning in heated email dispute with some Christians for my uncompromising stance against the agenda of Barack Obama. I am not charmed by his looks and charisma. I am not moved by his soaring rhetoric and contrived eloquence. I did not watch his swearing in. I could not. All I could see and hear were the broken bodies and stifled screams of millions upon millions of human beings whose cries ascend night and day before God’s throne. I am the friend of no man who will perpetuate the slaughter. I am the enemy of anyone who is the enemy of life.

The evangelicals yesterday shocked me with their willingness to make peace with the bloodshed, to relegate it to “just another issue” while claiming we need to give our dashing new President a chance. The shedding of innocent blood is never “just another issue” with God. Those who build their political kingdoms on the whited bones of the innocent are, in fact, the enemies of God. “All them that hate me love death,” says Proverbs 8:36.

Someone today in the news referred to Barack Obama as the revisiting of the Biblical Joshua. (I am going to get that quote posted shortly.) No, readers. Barack Obama is the revisiting of the Biblical Pharaoh who represents power religion. Power religion seeks to replace the one True God with the fierce humanist fist of the state. Our new pharaoh will bring oppression of God’s people, death to the innocent, and further idolatry among Americans who long ago turned their back on the true God of the Bible.

What is comforting in all of this is to hear the song of Moses and of Miriam in the book of Exodus as they saw God’s hand of deliverance. Pharaoh did not succeed in his desire to destroy God’s people. He himself saw his forces destroyed at the bottom of the Red Sea. It is helpful to revisit those joyful words, sung on the other side of the Red Sea.

Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the Lord, and spoke, saying:

“I will sing to the Lord,

For He has triumphed gloriously!

The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!

The Lord is my strength and song,

And He has become my salvation;

He is my God, and I will praise Him;

My father’s God, and I will exalt Him.

The Lord is a man of war;

The Lord is His name.

Pharaoh’s chariots and his army He has cast into the sea;

His chosen captains also are drowned in the Red Sea.

The depths have covered them;

They sank to the bottom like a stone.”

(From Exodus 15)

For a stunning musical treatment of this song, hear Handel’s Israel in Egypt. When the choir sings, “The horse and his rider, hath He thrown into the sea!”, it is not just a description of what God did to the Egyptian forces of Pharaoh, but also a picture of what Jesus Christ did when he broke the chains of our Pharaoh, Satan, at the cross. Praise God for His deliverance! Keep standing for life. Decry what is evil and don’t let the winds of compromise ever move you.

Have You Ever Read Romans 9? (James White) [Full Version]

Many people who oppose Calvinism have never really given a sufficient response to Romans 9 without venturing off into some philosophical rant or eisegesis. They also haven't bothered to tell how they make the switch from people to nations back to people by going through the text of Romans 9 alone.

James White provides a thorough exegesis of Romans 9.

Adrian Rogers v. James White on Calvinism (Radio Free Geneva)

January 21, 2009

Click the post title to be taken to the source.

This is the second edition of Radio Free Geneva on Youtube. In this edition, Dr. James White critiques a sermon presented by Dr. Adrian Rogers that gives many of the fallacies and inconsistencies those who do not hold to the Reformed faith usually commit. These errors include believing that the word "foreknow" is a noun, taking out words from Scripture like Matt. 23:37 to defend one's tradition, and thinking that unless a man's will is free, they are robots. This has been touted as very helpful by several people who have heard it because of Dr. White's refutations then explanations. The listener call-in section at around the last half hour or so is helpful, too. There was another part to this that was in a later episode of RFG. This should be posted soon.

The original broadcast was August 31st, 2002.

CHARLES SPURGEON: MEET THE ONLY GOD THERE IS

January 21, 2009

Click the post title to be taken to the source.

From the Charles Spurgeon devotional At the Master’s Feet for January 20. Using the Sword of the Spirit Spurgeon slices through the mystic mist of the mush god of contemporary Christendom:

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. (Galatians 6:7-8, KJV)

And we now declare that the God of Holy Scripture is a God of inflexible justice, He is not the God Whom some of you adore. You adore a god who winks at great sins; you believe in a god who calls your crimes peccadillos and little faults. Some of you worship a god who does not punish sin but who is so weakly merciful, and mercilessly weak, that he passes by transgressions and iniquity and never enacts a punishment.

You believe in a god who, if man sins, does not demand punishment for his offense. You think that a few good works of your own will pacify him, that he is so weak a ruler that a few good words uttered before him in prayer will win sufficient merit to reverse the sentence, if indeed you think he ever passes a sentence at all. Your god is no God; he is as much a false god of the Greeks or of ancient Nineveh.

The God of Scripture is one who is inflexibly severe in justice and will by no means clear the guilty. “The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked” (Nahum 1:3, KJV). The God of Scripture is a Ruler who, when His subjects rebel, marks their crime and never forgives them until He was punished it, either

Sanctity of Life

Click the post title to be taken to the source.

Passages to instruct us as we reach out, pray, vote and respond. Take time this week to pray for our nation’s leaders that their hearts would be turned to govern in the light and clarity of Holy Scripture.

God is the Creator of Life
Genesis 1:27 – So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Job 33:4 – The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

God creates and fashions life within the womb
Job 31:15 – Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?
The unborn are treated as persons in the Bible
Psalm 139:13-16 – For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s
womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are
wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in
the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my
unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of
them came to be.

Conception is a gift from God
Exodus 23:25-26 – Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and
water. I will take away sickness from among you, and none will miscarry or be barren in
your land. I will give you a full life-span.

Children are a gift from the Lord
Psalm 127:3-5 – Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. Like
arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose
quiver is full of them.

God forbids the taking of human life
Genesis 9:6 – Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the
image of God has God made man.
Exodus 20:13 – You shall not murder.
Exodus 21:22-25 – If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth
prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the
woman’s husband demands and the court allows. But if there is serious injury, you are to
take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn,
wound for wound, bruise for bruise.

We are to defend and protect life
Psalm 10:17-18 – You hear, O Lord, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and
you listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the oppressed in order that man, who is
of the earth, may terrify no more.
Psalm 41:1 – Blessed is he who has regard for the weak; the Lord delivers him in times of
trouble.
Proverbs 31:8-9 – Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all
who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Rape, incest, and birth defects do not justify taking the life of the child
Deuteronomy 24:16 – Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put
to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.
Isaiah 45:9-10 – Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker, to him who is but a potsherd
among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, “What are you
making?” Does your work say, “He has no hands?” Woe to him who says to his father,
“What have you begotten?” or to his mother, “What have you brought to birth?”
1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And
God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you
are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

God forgives the sin of abortion – There is GRACE, HOPE & FORGIVENESS!
Roman 5:20-21 – The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin
increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace
might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 John 1:9 – If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and
purify us from all unrighteousness.
