ted1If you’re an evangelical pastor of a huge church and the president of the National Association of Evangelicals and you decide to buy drugs, consort with gay prostitutes, and then lie about it to the world, never fear. You can always sell your lurid story to filmmakers and make considerable cash from it. In short, your career is just beginning.

United Press International reports that HBO will be screening “The Trials of Ted Haggard”, which we are told is, and I quote, “a documentary.” No wonder they’re airing it on HBO. Drug use, gay prostitutes, and lies are all part of an hour’s programming at the cable channel. To put it bluntly, Ted Haggard will feel right at home there.

Ted, HBO claims, will also be doing a publicity tour surrounding the documentary. You may see him at your local mall. It’s only the beginning. Then there will be a book published, Ted Haggard: True Confessions, or At Least Partially True Confessions, and his face will be leering out at us at every Barnes and Noble nationwide. After the book comes out, there will be appearances on every major talk show in the country, probably including Oprah. After that, Ted can leverage his comeback fame, stop selling insurance and start hosting seminars and workshops entitled, “Comeback–the Haggard Method.”

There is something inherently repellent about a fallen pastor making money off his deceitful and immoral conduct with a sordid movie. Ted dropped out of accountability and counseling sessions set up by several Christian leaders and against all counsel, has already made an appearance at a church as speaker. He wants a church again, big time. In the meantime, as he rebuilds his following, HBO will help pay the bills.
